Bamfield 2021!

After missing out on a lab retreat last year due to COVID-19 we were excited to get to go this year! We returned to Bamfield, fully vaccinated, and stayed at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre. In the spirit of truth and reconciliation, we went on a tour of an ancient Huu-ay-aht First Nations village - Kiixin - and learned a lot about the Huu-ay-aht from our guide, Wish Key, who is traditional knowledge holder. In addition, one afternoon Sam, Kevin, and Matt took us out on the boat to show us some of the sites where they conducted research over the summer and to find some marine wildlife! The retreat also included many useful discussions about goals, lab culture, tips for grad school, priorities versus obligations, and many rounds of SushiGo! We also celebrated Julia’s 10 year anniversary of being a professor at UVic with some champagne and pie (fresh picked blackberries by the lab and then handmade by Matt)! The time flew by as it was so fun to be able to be together again and get to connect with everyone, old and new! Looking forward to the year!
